'Sweets' without the Guilt from Peoplesway

By Christie C. Yerby, NMD

It has been said that "Stevia is the sweetener of choice for future generations."

If scientists were to formulate the perfect sweetener of 'the future,' it would taste good, have no calories, be nutritious, non-cancer causing, and safe for diabetics, hypoglycemics and weight-loss programs. As an added bonus, it would satisfy a sweet tooth and promote oral hygiene.

Luckily, the future and those of future generations can have this perfect sweetener now. Stevia, a sweet-leaf plant, has been around for hundreds of years yet has only been introduced to developed nations since around 1900. Public interest in stevia has skyrocketed since then, growing especially popular recently. As a result, we are happy to report that it has been selected to be included as one of the many health-promoting nutrients in the Peoplesway new product, Energy for Life, soon to be released in 2008.

Stevia rebaudiana, a plant native to Paraguay and Brazil, provides active plant extracts called steviosides. It is popular and currently approved as a sweetening agent or food additive in Japan, Brazil, and South Korea, Paraguay and China. There are now over 70 stevia-containing products on the Japanese market. In the U.S. stevia is approved as a nutritional supplement offering numerous health benefits to all ages.

It is estimated that over 500 scientific studies have been performed on stevia. Many scientists have reported numerous health benefits to adding stevia to the daily diet. Research indicates that stevia effectively regulates blood sugar in people with diabetes and hypoglycemia, bringing it toward more normal levels. Additionally, studies have shown that stevia tends to lower elevated blood pressure while not affecting people with normal blood pressures.

Stevia also inhibits the growth of oral bacteria and other infectious organisms. Regular users of stevia as a mouthwash or for brushing teeth (added to toothpaste) have reported improvements to bleeding gum problems. This inhibition of oral bacteria may explain why users of stevia-enhanced products report a lower incidence of colds and flu. Other benefits of adding stevia to the daily diet include improved digestion and soothed upset stomachs.

Stevia is an exceptional aid in weight loss and weight management because it contains no calories and reduces the craving for sweets and fatty foods. Steviosides pass through the human GI system without being altered by the digestive system and is therefore not absorbed into the blood and general circulation the way sugar is.

As just one of the many health-supporting ingredients in the unique Energy for Life product by Peoplesway, stevia contributes powerful botanical and medicinal properties, providing sweetness to the 'hilt,' without the downside of the 'guilt.'
