Green Tea Spotlighted
in Recent Research for Multiple Health Benefits

Research continues to show that green
tea has a multitude of health benefits, although Asian populations have known
this for thousands of years. As one of the ingredients in Peoplesway ProTrim
Rx, we have heard first hand of great weight loss results from many who have
shared their exciting stories with us. We are happy, although not surprised,
to see the research finally coming forth regarding the benefits of this powerful
plant.
A double-blind study reported in the January 2005 issue of the American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition that taking an extract high in a green tea substance called
catechins resulted in a loss of body fat and a reduction in the harmful changes
often occurring in LDLs, the bad cholesterol. This alteration of LDLs, called
oxidation, is believed to contribute to the formation of arterial plaque and
“hardening of the arteries.”
At the end of the study, those who had received the high amount of catechin
extract in green tea had experienced an average weight loss that was nearly
twice that of those who received the low catechin beverage. Total fat was decreased
to a significantly greater extent in the group who received the greater amount
of green tea. In animal studies, levels of cholesterol and triglycerides were
lower in those that received the green tea.
There is also evidence from some studies that green tea provides immune system
protection, particularly in the case of patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy.
White blood cell count appears to be maintained more effectively in patients
consuming green tea compared to non-supplementing patients.
Even more exciting is green tea’s effects in cancer prevention. One of green
tea’s active components, EGCG, has demonstrated strong antioxidant activity,
an action that destroys the free radicals that can damage DNA, cell membranes,
and other cell components. Damage to DNA makes the body more susceptible to
cancer and other degenerative diseases. Considering the fact that most anticancer
drugs have toxic side affects, the anticancer properties of green tea is a refreshing
alternative and just another health benefit found in Peoplesway ProTrim Rx.
Other data suggests that green tea may help to normalize and maintain healthy
blood sugar levels, preventing Type II Diabetes. And not to go without mention,
is the consideration from many scientists that feel that the antioxidant action
in green tea may help to fight the inflammation that causes the pain of arthritis.
Green tea and black tea actually come from the same plant, both starting out
with green leaves. To produce green tea, the leaves are briefly steamed, then
quickly dried which retains their natural color. Black tea is allowed to naturally
“ferment”, changing the color, chemistry, aroma, and flavor. Due to this difference
in processing, more health benefits have been linked to green tea rather than
black tea, since the health benefits from the catechins are destroyed by fermentation.
Unlike coffee, green tea is less likely to cause jitters from its caffeine content.
It contains a substance called L-theanine, an amino acid (protein) that has
been said to help create a state of relaxation, and thereby moderates the effects
of its caffeine.
As just one of the healing ingredients of ProTrim Rx, it is exciting to see
the totality of benefits found in ProTrim’s green tea: cancer and other chronic
disease prevention, weight loss, cholesterol lowering, blood sugar management,
and arthritic pain-relief. And although cultures from around the world have
experienced its health benefits for centuries, it is rewarding to see the scientific
research now supporting it.
